Apologies

I want to apoligize for not posting more on the blog. This holiday season has been particularly busy for us, we have had out of town company, work & family illness but I am hopeful that things are returning to normal. My Mom is on the mend, my sons will be going home next week, I should be over my cold soon & I have 5 days off next week in order to recover!
Happy New Year's Argenta, may it be a wonderful year for you all.

Eric Francis

Check out the latest edition of the "Arkansas Times". Argenta's own Eric Francis has written a very complimentary article about Argenta for their special on unique neighborhoods in central Arkansas. As always Eric did a great job! Thank you Eric!

Come by, bring a dish & have some Christmas cheer with your neighbors.
     Merry Christmas Argenta!
  • fyi: from a CityGrove person

    Hi Neighbors.
Last Friday someone attempted several times to kick open our front door between 8:30 & 9:00 PM while we were home. It was loud enough that Brent in the unit beside us heard it. Luckily, they weren’t successful and the door, frame and deadbolt held.
We filed a police report on Saturday when we saw the foot prints on our door. The police will be patrolling our neighborhood more often at night & asked that I share the following with all of you.
    · Crime is increasing this time of year because of the holiday season & that it’s darker earlier.
    · Consider leaving on your porch light & ground floor outdoor light by the sliding glass doors at night. This will deter break ins & increase visibility.
    · If you see any suspicious people or activity around the townhomes, call the police.
    · If you hear your neighbor’s alarm going off for more than a few seconds (a false alarm), call the police.

    Argenta Break-in

It has been reported to me that there was a break-in on the 700 block of Willow this afternoon. Apparently, the back door was the source of entry & yes, property was stolen. Please be careful this holiday season, secure your home, get an alarm, adopt a dog or a man eating, disease causing goose, depending on how you feel about THAT issue, in order to protect your home. All humor aside this is a serious issue & one that warrents us watching. PLease make friends with your neighbors, leave lights & TV's on when not at home and don't put it on a social network site when you are going out of town. We want everyone to have a safe & happy holiday.

The Arkansas Historic Preservation Program’s monthly Sandwiching in History tour series will feature three houses in the Argenta Historic District at noon on Friday, November 4, 2011. Please encourage neighborhood residents and friends to attend! The event is free and open to the public. No registration required. All ages welcome.

The Sandwiching in History Tour of the Edgar B. Moseley House at 415 Willow St. in North Little Rock will be at noon on Friday, November 4, 2011. The Moseley House at 415 Willow St. is one of the most outstanding examples of the Craftsman style in the Argenta Historic District. In addition to the home’s exterior detailing, its original Craftsman-style interior remains intact with columns, built-in shelving, and a coffered ceiling. Moseley was a pharmacist at Hall Drug Store, which occupied the building at 324 Main St. in North Little Rock from 1903 to 1916, when Argenta Drug Store moved into the building. In 1917 Moseley constructed three similar Craftsman-style houses at the southwest corner of Fifth and Willow streets—415 Willow, 400 W. 5th, and 404 W. 5th. Moseley initially lived in the two-story house at 400 W. 5th Street. His daughter, Vivian, and her husband, Dr. B. L. Church, lived in the house at 415 Willow. For more information, call Rachel Silva at (501) 324-9788.

The tour will begin at noon in front of 415 Willow. Tour participants are in for a special treat because they will also be allowed to tour the house at 404 W. 5th and peek inside the larger Craftsman house at 400 W. 5th as well.

    Freezer chest

The NLR Salvation Army Food Pantry is in need of a working Freezer chest, preferably large, if anyone has one they could donate. It doesn't have to be pretty just in working condition.
Remember sometimes it is easier to give than to sell, and the tax write off won't hurt either!
If you have a freezer chest you can part with please feel free to contact Salvation Army Food Pantry on 18th st in NLR @ 758-7297.
Let then know that Boosters sent you.

    Chili Supper & Food Drive

Wanted to thank everyone that particpated in Boosters Potluck & Salvation Army FOod Drive last Thursday. We had a pretty good turn out & some generous donations to the Salvation Army. All in all I would call it a success. There is even talk of making this a yearly occurance during the Block Party!
I want to send a special thank you to the folks @ First PResbyterian Church & their paster Anne Russ. You guys helped so much in making this all come together, thank you, thank you! And the deserts were wonderful!
Looking forward to next year a blowout Block Party!
    Thanks again for everyone's help!

    Dogtown Cookery

After hearing much local talk and then seeing the spot on Pam's Picks on channel 7 news, we had lunch at the new Dogtown Cookery on JFK. We wandered in with a large group following a "Sandwich Tour" by the History Commission so we had a bit of a wait to order.
Upon receiving our order, the first person in our group had the BLT, which she enjoyed. Bob had the Meatloaf sandwich and it was a hit, I will definitely be getting this next time. I had the Southern Revival Salad w/ Sorghum Vinaigrette, very nice!
We of course had the cheese dip as it has gotten much press, they won the recent "Best Cheese Dip" at a local Cheese Dip competition.  The first bite was wonderful but with each additional bite it began to lose it's thrill as it was overpowered by the very salty thick chips. If I had any request it would be to change the chips to something lighter so you can truly appreciate the flavor instead of being overpowered by salt.
In addition to lunch, they serve all your favorite varieties of coffee and specialize in unusual ice cream flavors, such as Jalapeno. Unfortunately we were too full to partake of the ice cream, but there is always tomorrow!
I would highly recommend the Dogtown Eatery and plan on returning soon, however, I may bring my own chips if I order the cheese dip.

    Argenta Market

The hub & I recently shared a lunch at Argenta Market and I wanted to let my neighbors know much we enjoyed it. Bob & I shared hot Pastrami on Rye with homemade potato chips. I haven't had Pastrami like this, in central Arkansas, since Louis's Delicatessen in the old Park Plaza. Those of you who remember Louis's know what I am talking about!
We also shared a cup of squash soup & the loaded potato salad. OMG! Talk about pure pleasure for you taste buds, that potato salad was the bomb! I can't tell you when I enjoyed a meal out as much as this, everything was an experience.
If you haven't been to the market for their lunch or prepared dinner items I want to encourage you to venture out & explore this wonderful food source. As for me, I will be eating there a lot more often, I have potato salad & hot Pastrami on the brain...........Yum!

P.S. This is an independent review & was not solicited by anyone involved with the market, even though I love those guys!

    Sidewalks

I would like to talk to my neighbors about their sidewalks. Lately I have seen some issues that need to be addressed. Did you know that as a home or lot owner, or simply as a renter, you are responsible for your sidewalk & common areas maintenance? If you have grass growing up between the cracks you should be the one maintaining this growth. If you mow your yard you should be courteous & sweep the clippings from your sidewalk. If you put yard trash out, like clippings & branches, you should put this between the curb and the sidewalk. Not on the sidewalk. By the way, NLR picks up yard waste on Wednesdays.
Lately I have noticed that folks walking have to retreat to the street because stretches of sidewalk are overgrown and cluttered. The school for the blind brings students to Argenta for training as this area is safe and easy to navigate. The students are not the only ones to have difficulty due to overgrown vegetation and debris cluttering the sidewalks. The city code regulates a 7' clearance over the sidewalk and 9' over the street.
Be a good neighbor and keep your sidewalks clear. We do not want our lovely neighbrhood to regress and become a waste land of unkept lawns & sidewalks.

    ACT Hosts First Farewell

Make plans to see First Farewell, a drama set during Sarah Bernhardt's 1906 visit to Little Rock, at Argenta Community Theater, September 23 & 24, with a Saturday matinee performance on September 24.
The script is based on facts of the great French actress' "First Farewell," after five previous American tours, and the occasion of her first performances in Arkansas. Her special train parked overnight at the Choctaw Station, and a carriage took her to the Forest Park Amphitheater, where she performed Camille, the English title of Dumas' play La Dame aux Camellias. Riding electric streetcars, an audience of 2,000 attended the play. Visit www.ArgentaCommunityTheater.com for more information.

Wanted to apologize for not posting the last few weeks. I have been very busy. Recently I traveled to Portland, OR, came home exhausted (there is so much to do in Portland!!),  my son Dan came for a visit from Denver, then there is this thing called work and my other city commitments that  rendered me useless for blogging. Please forgive me and I hope to get back in the saddle again!

Argenta's Neighborhood Boosters Annual Gems & Junk Sale is September 17th from 7am til 1pm. We are asking only for a $5.00 donation to Boosters for covering the cost of advertising. This year we are going to have a map of participants sales locations, once the ad is paid we will place you on the map. If neighbors want to get together for one large sale at an individual location their cost will still only be $5.00. As always, any proceeds from sales goes directly to the seller never to Boosters.
Please feel free to contact me @Bbnbragsdale@comcast.net or 376-1127 to submit your payment or for any questions.

Block Party committee has met & come up wth a unique idea this year. Instead of a block party we are going to have a  Food Drive and Chili Supper. The NLR Salvation Army Pantry is in dire need of supplies. Boosters feels, as a thrivng neighborhood we could step up and help them in their time of need. Dates & times are pending at this time, but we can tell you that it will be in October & hopefully partnered with First Pres. Church at 4th & Maple. As soon as we have all the details worked out you will be the first to know.
In 2012 we plan to have a blow out Block party!!

    Mac came home!

Wanted to let everyone know that Mac showed up on our doorstep late last night!! We want to thank the wonderful guys at Allied Printers that made the rescue posters for us, you are my heroes!
We believe that some nice person took Mac in, saw the posters & sent him home. He came back looking fabulous, well nourished & hydrated. If he had been cattin' around for the past 4 days he would have been scruffier.
Toeveryone who kept an eye out for him, for Allied Printing & for who ever set Mac free, we humbly thank you.

    Booster's Thursday meeting

Had a good meeting at Booster's this week. Alderman Maurice Taylor was our speaker & wish to thank him for making it even after his car broke down! Thanks Maurice!
We discussed some issues with Maurice, some of which may affect you.
We first discussed trees in the neighborhood & the need for pruning or possible elimination of some tress in city owned areas. We reported to him some of the severe damage left behind as a result of this years storms. We are going to start surveying trees in the neighborhood that may pose a hazard. If you have, or know of a tree, that is questionable to public safety please let us know so it can get on the list for evaluation. My email is: bnbragsdale@comcast.net.
We also discussed the rules pertaining to "Rooming houses", this will be an ongoing issue, discussions are open and will continue. Please email me your concerns or any issues you may be having with a rooming house anywhere in NLR. A rooming house is defined as a house that rents out "rooms" to more than 2 families on a weekly basis.
Last but not least we started discussions on Gems & junk Yard Sale and the yearly Block Party. After Sonja Miller graciously searched the Razorback schedule for this fall we came up with these dates to save.
Gems & Junk Yard sale- Saturday Sept 17th. as always we ask participants to contribute $5.00 towards the ad. Gazette also provides free Garage sale kits.
Block Party- Saturday Oct. 15th from noon-3pm. This year we are also going to have a  Food Drive to benefit the NLR Salvation Army pantry.
We will have our first planning meeting at my house 216 West 6th st on Wednesday July 27th 6:30 p.m. We hope to keep this meeting short but need as many folks to show up as possible.
There is no August Boosters meeting so we will schedule the next planning meeting at the meeting on July 27th.
    Remember- Let's Keep Boostering!

Improving neighborhood "walkability" enhances property values

    Did You Know?
WalkScore.com rates locations according to a walkability index from 1 to 100. One study found that, in general, every one-point increase in a home's Walk Score raised its value by $700 to $3,000. Walkability also enhances health and reducing the need to drive saves big money.

    The rep

A group of us went to the Rep last night to see their final show this season & before they start renovations. We saw "39 Steps" a comedic spin off of the Hitchcock classic. I want to encourage everyone to go & see this very funny show, it runs until June 26th. Once this show closes so will the Rep, for renovations. They will reopen in September 2011.
If you need a good laugh go see this, it sure beats the "teen" comedies at the local cineplex.

    The train

Due to recent flooding in Wyoming, Montana & the Dakota's the The UP Train left @ 8:00 a.m. this morning. I am very sorry the word didn't get out sooner so folks could change their plans (including me) so they could see the train yesterday. At least I got to hear the whistle!
